Pity Mr. Gurney didn't have a tat or an endorsement contract.
He would have been so much more mainstream.
The best of the privateers.

I am not Ryan Air, so I am not buying Nikki Lauda's crap, on or off the track.
As I said, my money would be better spent on a Hamilton/Mayweather fight. I am sure Liberty Media does not see it that way, and that is their privilege.
I do expect some sort of fight at some point this year. As I see it, the largest part of Hamilton's success is following the Schumacher style of forcing off's. That will last only so
long. No matter how many trophys Hamilton has, off's are not a privilege.
So, here we are; 2018 and an overpriced lawn mower.
F1 Television
Like it or not.
I get more bad camera work than I can mentally process.
Instead of one bad camera shot, I get dozens. Great!
Few understand the camera work behind open wheel racing. Among those, Formula 1.
For the media types, including and especially Liberty...
It's been a LOOOOOONNNNNGGGGG winter.
Not so long as New York's.
Glad your back. I'll be there.
I will not find 75 seconds of the exact footage to demonstrate my point.
The footage from 6:30 to 7:45 will suffice. (The first green flag lap.)
LONG PAN SHOTS.
Put that 75 seconds up against current footage. Of any open wheel racing.

The brilliant (and simple) racing analytics of the McPaper.
I was just going to say...
What kept Danica from being a 'megastar' ?
Was fortysomething other guys driving like Kevin Harvick.
I have seen some brilliant driving out of Verstappen in the past, sharing the track is
not among those moves. I would expect someone to explain some of the very basics
of downforce to him.
I cannot count the amount of times over the many years where I have had to
adjust my braking for another vehicle, in any position. Someone should explain that.
Sharing the track is a real problem in F1.
I think some of these drivers should consider NASCAR.

The thought that Danica could be in Auto Racing longer
than the France Family is a truly endearing one.

Albedo
Albedo or reflection coefficient, derived from Latin albedo "whiteness" (or reflected sunlight) in turn from albus "white", is the diffuse reflectivity or reflecting power of a surface. It is the ratio of reflected radiation from the surface to incident radiation upon it
The Earth's albedo is .039.
An American Trucker has about 160,000 Kilometers per year behind the wheel.
That is more than all of Formula 1's Drivers lifetime experience combined.
I have held a CDL continuously since 1978.
Do the math.

Every Racing Steward's dream!
Was that Bottas doing an Uncle Fester routine on the Podium after Qualifying?
He's on the right team.
You don't have to be the best driver, just have the fastest car.
And, it's nice to pick up those extra points when your teammate chokes.

It's all Putin's fault...
In the last month-
Trumpy and the Republicans tore up the Iran Treaty, retreated from their aggression
towards China, all but abandoned the North/South Korea Issue, issued a intent to
impose tariffs on all imported cars (European and Japanese), all the while claiming
a oil shortage that can in no way exist. Crude is at $70 a barrel, about $45 a barrel
ABOVE the low of $26 around a year and half ago.
Iran and Japan have traded since WWll.
The treaty Trump tore up was Japan's source of energy since WWll,
when we shut off their supply of Oil. (the impetus for Pearl Harbor.)
Is Hezbollah that big of threat? Is this Putin's fault?

Practice makes perfect.
As I have said, eggbeaters were plentiful when I was young and we were not interested in keeping body shops in
business. So we got lots of practice on hit and miss. On the strength of a sidewall or the suspension,
and before airbags, the resilience of a bumper. And trashcans and inappropriately placed foliage, and anything
else that happened alone.
Wandering around Arvada one summer evening with no particular destination in mind we happened in a
neighborhood whose trash day was scheduled for the next day. Annoyed that the bins had been left in the
street, we were convinced that this was only to prevent our leisurely top gear survey of the neighborhood.
It became less of a game of tipping cans, and more of a guessing game of how full the can was and how much
damage it would do to the bumper. We won!

On Boredom
If you left Monaco with a sense of boredom, you have lost the spirit and essence of the Sport of Formula 1, the sport of Gentlemen, and the sport created and nurtured by people whom really understand it.
Open Wheel Racing isn't a second by second thrill ride for those who follow. For the driver - it is.
Those who would see the entire sport as a pursuit - such as Sir Stewart, are less concerned with
fulfilling the needs of bloodthirsty fans looking to live vicariously, and dedicated to preserving the integrity the continuity and the very sureness of 'The Sport of Gentlemen'.
That - is the difference between a 'fan' and a 'student of the sport'.
A lament, and June's Phil_321 Post.
Also, I was reminded that Bourdain's corpse is property of the
European Union now. CNN should know, there could be a fine.

Please Exit Through The Gift Shop, Continued...
In the early days, one of Disney's final and most famous endeavours was to force the hapless and cash-strapped visitors through the giftshop as the only means of exiting the park. Of course, you were politely invited to purchase a memento of the occasion. Neon colored
characters were strategically placed on the lower shelves to ensure screaming sugar induced children would beg and scream for more!
And they did.
Between Disney/ABC and Universal/NBC - Fox will exit through the gift shop. I wouldn't sugar coat that.

I will finish the July edition of Phil_321 this weekend. Notwithstanding that
Silverstone is next, a survey of just the front page shows many subjects.

Disappointment.
Let's see, McLaren gave Will Buxton a car with which to tour the French countryside.
He returned the car in one piece, leaving the entire French countryside intact.
Shameful behaviour. A discredit to professional drivers everywhere.
I would have trashed both, fully expecting and enjoying McLaren and France's wrath.
July 1st
You can expect to see offs today, and as we saw in France, first lap collisions.
That is the nature of the rulemaking and enforcement.
Shoving each other off the track is very unsightly, at least to me...

Nobody's perfect!
Fairly clean race, surprisingly. Reminded of the dominance of Mercedes,
not by their win, by their misfortune.
Acht, those merciless Germans! It just appears that way. Before Mercedes
was Red Bull in their previous form.
I want you to have a equally good race at Silverstone. Enjoy.

Rickenbacker's Regrets...
I would not expect any of Penske's admirers to loan me a sports car, and if they did...
they would only do it once...
I would not call the Hulman Family the 'Addams Family', but I will muse over the things
that might have been. The Speedway was purchased for $750,000 in 1945.

Oddly enough, I get a Sky News feed by way of ESPN2.
Don't get me wrong, Cyril Abiteboul is a respectable sort, and I am enamoured by Renault at least a little more than Kimi; but Sky insists on
continually going to Cyril for commentary during the race. They feed us
little segments of strategy (Renault has strategy) and comments meant
to inform the listener, at a volume only slightly below a whisper.
None of this is intelligible. Not a word from Cyril translates into something
even an American can understand.
So, I am wondering, could they get Paul di Resta to translate?

For the last quarter century California DOT (CALTRANS) has a policy of $1000 a day fines
for drivers who do not fill in the form correctly. That is a personal fine, not a company fine.
All the while insisting the accident's almost always the truckers fault, and refusing to
enforce the speed laws against motorists.
It's not just my bitch, it is the entire industries bitch.
That truck saw 47 states, Boston Harbor, the World Trade Center, DC, and everything in between, but it NEVER saw the State of California.
And Yes, it is pointed east in this picture.

It must be that new car smell that keeps America's media so blindingly naive.
These are the two most responsible for keeping Detroit alive, and not whinnying Democrats.
Meanwhile, 'Petulant Child In Chief' cancels a South Korea Envoy led by Ford Motor Co.'s Steve Biegun. Go figure.

RE: Halo Discussion
I have given this considerable thought. The first thought was that it had already
been introduced before I could interject. The next thought was that to invest in
a CAD program and design a safety device would be unprofitable. The Mercedes
Connectivity Award addresses communications. Not that I want to meet their drivers.
The Halo CAN be designed without decreased vision. Whether or not
this ever comes to be depends on F1 listening to engineers.

P3 Ancillary Discussion:
Trolling me during a Ricin investigation, and using helicopters to harass me while
driving on the freeway earned select elements of the Justice Dept. (read: Bureau)
a special place (an uncomfortable one) in the annals of disaster prevention.
So, if it's the 105, the 195, the 465 or the 210, I have the experience to know
the context of the discussion and no amount of trolling will change that.
MY Phone is not an element of interest for the Justice Department.
There is an opinion that hacking my phone, using aircraft to stalk me, stalking
across state lines, and numerous other felonies are not an indication
of a predilection that is biased on the fundamentals of Democracy.
It is an indication - that at some point, there will be interference.

Красивые достопримечательности
I saw beautiful sights today in Sochi. I saw Ross Brawn entertain the President of Russia, I saw Mercedes flinch at the
